The Rooted Holidays: A Practical Guide to Christmas, Hanukkah, and Grace
December is the only month of the year where your holiday decorations can start a theological fistfight at the dinner table.
Tree or no tree? Menorah or nativity? Both? Neither? And heaven help you if Grandma finds out you’re thinking about skipping Santa this year.
Here’s what I’ve learned after years of wrestling with this myself: that knot in your stomach every December? That “am I getting this right?” feeling that keeps you up at night? That’s sacred. A person who doesn’t care about honoring God doesn’t lose sleep over a Christmas tree. The struggle is the growth — a seed has to break open before it can sprout.
That’s why I wrote The Rooted Holidays: A Practical Guide to Christmas, Hanukkah, and Grace — Book 9 in the Rooted in Grace series. Not to tell you which holiday to celebrate. The internet has plenty of people yelling about that, and some of the meanest things I’ve ever read from believers were about Christmas lights. This book has exactly one thesis, and I’ll say it right here so there’s no confusion: whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, both, or neither — do it in grace, and never judge a fellow believer who’s wrestling to be faithful.
What the book covers
15 chapters, each ending with action steps. Here’s the road map:
The real history of Hanukkah — the Maccabees, the oil, and why a “minor” Jewish festival still echoes with the story of Elohim preserving His people by pure grace. The real history of Christmas — December 25th, Saturnalia, the whole unvarnished story, because you deserve the truth presented fairly. Was Yeshua born on December 25? (Spoiler: almost certainly not, and I’ll show you why without a hint of smugness.) Yeshua at Hanukkah — yes, He was there, and John 10 tells us about it.
Then the practical stuff: the Romans 14 principle for disagreements, how to handle Santa/trees/lights without losing your mind or your family, how to actually celebrate either holiday as a believer, what to do when your family disagrees with you, how to teach your kids without making them feel like the weird kids, and how to keep worship at the center of it all.
The book is written in my own Messianic framework: Yeshua is the fully Jewish Messiah — YHWH in flesh — who kept Torah, and Gentile believers are grafted into Israel’s olive tree through Romans 11. All Scripture is from the World English Bible. No guilt trips, no condemnation, no picking sides in the December culture war.
Who it’s for
Believers who grew up with Christmas and are now discovering the Jewish roots of their faith — and feel torn. Believers who discovered Hanukkah and lit the menorah for the first time, then got “the look” from Mom. Parents trying to teach their kids without turning December into a battlefield. Small groups and women’s ministry leaders looking for honest, grace-first material. Basically: if December makes you think harder than any other month, this book was written for you.
A word from Chapter 1 (free)
“You can be right about the history and completely wrong about the heart. You can win the argument about Saturnalia and lose your brother. And what good is that?”
That line cost me some sleep to write, because I’ve been on both sides of it. Knowledge without love is just a louder way to be wrong. This book is my attempt to give you the full truth about both holidays — and the grace to hold it gently.
