The Practical Etsy Seller: Digital Products, Print on Demand, and Real Income

Print on demand is the closest thing Etsy has to a magic trick: you sell t-shirts, mugs, and posters without owning a printer, stocking inventory, or ever visiting the post office. A buyer orders, a printing partner prints and ships, and you keep the difference — on products you never touched. That’s Chapter 4 of my new book, The Practical Etsy Seller: 15 chapters on making money on Etsy, from digital products you create once and sell forever to print-on-demand shops with zero boxes in your garage. Every chapter ends with action steps, same as all my books.

What the book covers

Why Etsy is still worth it in 2026, then picking a niche that actually buys. Digital products 101 — the sell-it-forever model — and print on demand, step by step: how it works, Printful vs. Printify (honest comparison), and connecting it all to your shop. Creating products with Canva and AI tools, pricing for profit (with the real math), opening your shop, listings that sell, and photos and mockups that do the heavy lifting. Then the business side: reviews and customer service, marketing beyond Etsy, scaling up, taxes and bookkeeping basics, and — the chapter that saves shops — avoiding scams, suspensions, and policy violations. Closes with a 90-day launch plan.

Who it’s for

Designers, Canva tinkerers, “I have ideas but no inventory” people, and anyone who wants a side hustle without a garage full of boxes. If you can make something on a screen, you can sell it on Etsy.

One tip from Chapter 4 (free)

Here’s the profit math on a print-on-demand t-shirt: it sells on Etsy for $24.99, costs you roughly $12–14 all-in (blank shirt, printing, shipping), and after Etsy’s fees you keep about $9–10 — on a product you never touched, never stored, never shipped. The formula is sale price − base cost − Etsy fees = your cut. Start with one proven product (the Bella + Canvas 3001 tee is the industry workhorse), 10–20 designs, and one rule: always order samples before you sell. A $25 sample that reveals a blurry print saves you from fifty one-star reviews.
